I love reading. No, really, I LOVE it. I am the kind of person who starts reading and becomes so enthralled with the story that I have to finish it as quickly as possible. Everything else in my life can be ignored until I finish the book. There’s just something magical about being able to escape your own worries for a while and experience the life of someone else. There is so much to be learned from literature.

Reading with kids has so many great benefits, even when it is the same book over and over again.

Needless to say, one of the things I looked forward to most when I found out I was going to be a mom was reading to my child. Honestly, children’s books are my favorite. They are funny, clever, adorable, and they teach valuable lessons in a way that makes sense to little ones.

I’m so happy that, so far, both of my daughters absolutely love to read books. Some of my favorite memories are reading with my girls. On our last trip to the library, we checked out 22 books! We came home and read them all. For me, reading just never gets old.

I know reading doesn’t come easy to every family, but I encourage you to get a library card and visit your local library. They are an amazing resource and there is truly a book for everyone there. I think it’s really important to let your kids choose their own books, especially when they’re just starting to read/be read to. Do I always want to read Barbie books or Fancy Nancy? Definitely not, but my daughter is a huge fan of both and I want to encourage her to read whatever she likes!

If reading isn’t your thing, that’s okay too! It’s still important to make reading a part of your child’s life. If you need extra help with this, you can ask a trusted friend, teacher, or even the local librarian! I know any of them would be happy to help. Now that you’re done reading this, make it a goal to read a book with your child today! It’s a wonderful activity you can both find joy in.

Emily is a stay-at-home mom of two girls living in Saint Anthony. She has been married to her best friend for four years and family is what brings her the most joy. When she’s not busy wrangling her 3 year old or feeding her newborn, she enjoys exercising, eating, baking, reading, and watching tv (mainly New Girl and The Office.) She loves being outside and has a love/hate relationship with cleaning. She also has an unhealthy obsession with chocolate milk and listening to true crime podcasts. She hopes to live on a large property with farm animals someday.
