The other day I saw a video of my high school self singing a solo at a choir concert. I was nervous and a little shaky, but I did a good job and I remember feeling so proud of myself after that performance. It reminded me that I haven’t sung in public since my sophomore year in college.
Remember when we were little and we did all kinds of activities? In my childhood I did soccer, softball, voice and piano lessons, swim team, FFA, school choir, and musicals. Was I that great at any of these things? No, not really.
But now that I’m a “grown-up,” I’ve been telling myself that I need to be really good at something in order for it to be worthy of my time. And honestly, that’s super messed up!
I take my daughter to gymnastics every Tuesday at 10:00 AM. Do I expect her to be the next Simone Biles? Definitely not, but I know she has fun doing it and I want her to do the things she loves! At the same time, I tell myself I shouldn’t waste nap time playing guitar because I’m not as good as I think I should be. Seriously, why do I do that?!
As moms, we give up so much for our kids to have good lives. We help them actively pursue their interests and explore their hobbies.
But what lesson are we teaching our children if we aren’t doing the same for ourselves?
Mamas, we have to give ourselves time to do the things we love! Stop telling yourself that you shouldn’t do something if you’re not that good at it. If it brings you joy, IT IS WORTH YOUR TIME! Don’t be afraid to invest in yourself, it is never too late! Take lessons, join a sports team, sing at an open mic night! You are worth it!
