There’s a lot of hype going on right now about creating a tidier home (#konmari), but if spring cleaning your entire living quarters including all of those storage bins in the garage (yikes!!) sounds a bit too overwhelming right now…
Here are some simple ways to create a more comfortable and inviting home environment by using your five senses.
Sight
It is March, so now would be a fun time to break out some spring-themed décor! Two of my favorite local places to find adorable holiday and home décor are The Vintage Emporium in downtown Idaho Falls and Love at First Bite on the Snake River Landing. As a minimalist, my house isn’t crawling with themed decorations, but it’s fun for the kids, visitors, and myself to have some change in the scenery at home each month!
Sound
While I don’t have music playing constantly within my home, I find that it can help create a certain energy when needed. During mealtimes (especially dinner), we like to have soft music, but after dinner is when the party starts! We pump the volume up and jam to our favorites while we clean up together. Music can be so motivating and gets everyone on board whenever it is time to clean!
Taste
There are some meals that always remind me of my mom and childhood home. I try to create potential memories like this with my own family by having a signature dish once a week that we can always count on (Taco Tuesdays anyone??). For us, it’s a creamy Italian chicken dish made in the Intant Pot for Sunday dinners!
Smell
You could bake cookies in your oven every day to create an amazing smell that fills the house before the kids come home from school… but that might ruin your diet. Instead, I love using scented wax melters with seasonal smells (fall scents are my fav).
Touch
Do you have a couch in your living room that no one really likes to sit on? It may be beautiful, but not necessarily the comfiest. Try putting some fluffy pillows and/or a super soft throw over it to make it more inviting! Have you ever seen those Mongolian sheepskin rugs? Have you ever felt one of them? They. Are. Amazing.
What I love about using the five senses to create a more inviting home is that you can personalize it so easily! These are only some suggestions, but let them spark up your imagination and go wild with creating the home environment that you want!
