It’s no secret that there are a lot of expectations surrounding Valentine’s Day. In fact, many consider this holiday to be just as important as their anniversary, which means that a lot of pressure falls on our significant others to provide a romantic experience that meets the mark.

To make things easier on our significant others, East Idaho Moms conducted an informal poll asking women what they want for Valentine’s Day, and here are the results!

Ladies, feel free to leave this blog post open on your man’s phone, wink wink!

  1. Do women want chocolate or roses?

Believe it or not, this one is close. 53% of respondents said that they would prefer chocolates as their gift on Valentine’s Day, while 47% said roses. A safe bet would be to buy your significant other both roses and their favorite candy bar. An overwhelming majority of ladies could care less about an assorted box of chocolates. They would rather enjoy their tried-and-true favorites.

2. Will flowers do?

Many women said that they would find flowers to be a romantic gesture. However, 14% of women said that they would prefer a real houseplant over cut roses. If you aren’t sure what kind of plant to get your significant other, some good starting plants are pothos, snake plants, succulents, and cacti. They are very hard to kill! If your significant other has a green thumb, try finding a plant that they do not yet own. When in doubt, cut roses and flowers will do!

3. To Dine or Not to Dine?

The answer is overwhelmingly… unclear. But this is for certain: your significant other wants to spend time with you on Valentine’s Day. 57% of women would prefer going out on a date for the special occasion. When further polled, 44% of women said that they would prefer to do a fun activity rather than dinner. Whatever you choose, make sure you make plans early so that you aren’t waiting for a table or a turn. And if going out isn’t possible, 19% of women said that they would love a home-cooked meal where they do not have to cook or clean afterward!

4. Clothing or Jewelry?

Valentine’s Day does not mean that you have to spend your paycheck on new diamonds or jewelry for your lady. In fact, 38% of women don’t want jewelry at all. 63% of those surveyed said that they would prefer their boo get them a gift card to their favorite clothing store if they had to choose between clothing and jewelry.

And interestingly enough, many women don’t want either. An overwhelming majority of women would prefer their significant other purchase them self-care items for Valentine’s Day. So, save yourself the hassle of choosing a piece of jewelry or clothing that meets the mark, and instead get them bath bombs, luxury creams, lotions, or that set of makeup they’ve been eyeing.

5. What about Gift Cards?

YES PLEASE! Believe it or not, but most of our responders said that receiving a gift card for a massage, spa day, or shopping spree would be better than a traditional Valentine’s Day gift. Only 2% of women said that they would want a gift card to a restaurant. It is clear that your boo wants you to spoil them with a day to treat themselves after Valentine’s Day.

6. The Pièce De Résistance: Bedroom Items

This is the moment you’ve been waiting for, isn’t it? 3 out of 4 women said that a significant other purchasing items for the bedroom would be both romantic and exciting for Valentine’s Day. We will let you take that one from here. If in doubt, have a conversation with your partner about what they might like or enjoy before Valentine’s Day.

7. Make Valentine’s Day Extra Special with Personalization

Some women responded that while traditional Valentine’s Day gifts are exciting and thoughtful, they have other ideas on their minds. Many readers said that they would love a planned date where they don’t have to do anything. It’s clear that they want their partners to put in the effort to show he cares.

Another said that she would rather receive an experience than material things. Maybe Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to pull out all the stops and try something you’ve never done before. Plan ahead for childcare and reserve an appointment if this is the route you go!

One reader said she wanted new shoes, specifically tennis shoes. If the lady in your life is a shoe girl, a gift card to their favorite shoe store may be the ideal gift!

Another suggestion is a house cleaning! Paying someone to come in and deep clean the house before or after Valentine’s Day sounds like heaven! Many cleaning companies have deals around Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day on a one-time clean. Just make sure you still give your partner time and attention on Valentine’s Day.

Many women also said that they would love a spa day or a massage appointment. And they aren’t meaning you greasing them up in the bedroom. They want a professional massage, pedicure, manicure, or hairdo. Making them an appointment for a day of relaxation can be the ultimate way to show you care. We recommend making an appointment for a day other than Valentine’s Day so that the woman in your life can still spend time with you and be pampered later.

So, if you’re looking to show your woman that you care, why not mix and match a few of these ideas within your budget.

Lucky for you, our Shop Local Guide has locally-owned businesses that meet many of these wants and wishes (massages, day date activities, yummy treats, jewelry vendors, and more!).
