The Idaho Falls Moms Blog is excited to feature the American Heart Association as our nonprofit of the month. Eastern Idaho is fortunate to have a wealth of nonprofit and service organizations. By highlighting some of these groups, we hope to encourage moms and families to get involved and learn about all that our wonderful community has to offer.

The National American Heart Association was founded by six cardiologists in 1924.  The association went public in late 1948, during a network radio contest hosted by Ralph Edwards, and a national campaign was launched in 1949.  Since then, the mission of the American Heart Association has developed “to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives.”  The American Heart Association has grown into an official nonprofit organization under the 501 (c ) 3 organization with representation in all 50 states.

The State of Idaho has its American Heart Association offices in Boise.  According to Jake Abbott, Executive Director of the Idaho American Heart Association, the organization serves “everyone, (because) heart disease is the No. 1 killer worldwide.”

“You or someone you know has probably been affected.”

The American Heart Association educates on better diet, cholesterol control, weight loss, smoking cessation, blood sugar reduction, and blood pressure control in order to help prevent heart disease in our community.

The Idaho branch of the American Heart Association hosts two main fundraisers every year, one in February and the other in April.  The Go Red for Women Luncheon will occur on February 21, 2020 in Boise, ID, and the Treasure Valley Heart Walk will take place on April 30, 2020 in Meridian, ID.
