I am a summer girl through and through. I love being outside all the time and the abundance of sunshine! I love swimming and long walks and eating all the fresh fruit, it just feels like a happier time! However, I live in East Idaho – don’t ask me how that happened. We deal with some pretty brutal winters, and usually by February, I find myself feeling a little down. Having lived here a few years now, I’ve found some things that have helped me find more joy in this season that sometimes feels like it’s never going to end.
The first is getting outside. Some days, I go on a walk. Even if it’s not as enjoyable as a warm summer evening, exercise boosts my endorphins and allows me to recognize the beauty around me. There are also rare days where the sun is shining and it feels warmer than usual. On those days, I take full advantage! I try to take an extra-long walk or visit one of the many beautiful parks we have in our area.
The next thing that’s helped is finding an indoor hobby. Lately, for me, this has been crafting. Taking a little time in my day or week to do something I enjoy makes a big difference in my overall happiness. It doesn’t have to be something huge, maybe it’s just reading a book, but doing something you enjoy can really boost your mood.
Another thing that helps me is getting out of the house! This is a little harder with COVID and little ones, but I still try to do it. Shop at a new store or one you don’t get to go to often. Go for a drive. Go get McDonald’s and eat it in a random parking lot! It doesn’t matter what you do, just get out for a bit. A change of scenery really helps.
The last thing I’ve enjoyed is planning small trips that help me recognize and enjoy the beauty of winter. My husband’s family owns a cabin in McCall, Idaho and it is a literal winter wonderland! I’ve been there in the summer and winter and it’s equally beautiful and enjoyable in each season. Sledding at the sand dunes or driving up to Island Park for some outdoor fun is a great way to remember that winter isn’t all bad!
Don’t get me wrong, winter here isn’t completely miserable. I really do love the beautiful snow, but it can get so old! If you’re like me and struggle with feeling down this season, I hope something on this list can help boost your mood and get you through until Spring comes around!
